Diana Inspire Event Leeds

diana-award

On Thursday 9th November 2017, ten McAuley Buddies attended the Diana Inspire Award Ceremony at Leeds College of Music. We were ushered into the auditorium where the presentation took place. It was hosted by Abbie Dewhurst the BBC weather presenter. We were so privileged to be among so many different inspirational young people who received awards alongside us.

Hameed walked three thousand miles to find safety in the UK, he overcame devastating circumstances to escape Afghanistan as an asylum seeker. Separated from his family he learned to speak English and works to support other peers who have faced similar adversity.

Hannah has raised £35,000 for charities, other young people have been involved in mentoring programmes, anti-bullying work, diversity, social action projects, taken a lead in school to work with governors and head teachers highlighting the dedication of young people to support many people in their school and wider community community.

The event was attended by Voice Kids judge, Danny Jones (Mrs McCallum took a picture for her daughter – who loves him). In addition to this we met and talked to Dame Ingrid Roscoe who is the Lord Lieutenant of West Yorkshire. We shared some of our experiences with her and she was very interested in the work we have done; she also told us that she was going to share our information at a conference she is attending as we were inspirational.

Hannah Cockcroft, who is a double gold medal Paralympian, presented us with our certificates. She allowed us to hold one of her gold medals.

During the afternoon we took part in two workshops. One workshop was improving our public speaking skills. The second was planning and creating a social action project that we would want to be involved in. A handful of groups were given the opportunity to explain their project to everyone else. One of our groups were chosen and discussed a project called Donny Claus, which would involve visiting Doncaster Royal Infirmary to cheer up the people in hospital over the Christmas period by giving gifts to the children and singing hymns for the elderly. We are meeting with Mr Rooney this week to share our experience and ideas for developing a Social Action Project in school.
