Doncaster 1914–18 recently visited Year 8 students to deliver interactive workshops on the First World War and poetry. Doncaster 1914 -18 encourages the people of Doncaster to uncover and share their own First World War stories.
This session explored what life in the trenches was like for the men of Doncaster. Students were encouraged to create their own 'trench' using replica First World War items and copies of objects and material from Doncaster Museum & Archives. They created a trench based on the life of a particular soldier from Doncaster. They also had the chance to get hands-on with real First World War objects and get dressed up in First World War costume and uniforms.
Students also worked with BA (Hons) English students from University Centre Doncaster to design a war poetry lesson. Students were guided through a critical reading of a poem and encouraged them to create their own.
Incredible feedback from students - many thanks to everyone involved!
